Ball and socket joint connections according to DIN 12242 are essential components for flexible and tight connections in laboratory technology. The system consists of two complementary parts: the ball joint socket (Form A, hollow ground joint) and the ball joint sphere (Form B, solid ground joint). Together they form a movable, tight connection that compensates for angular deviations while ensuring a secure hold.

Technical Features:

  • Material: Borosilicate glass 3.3 according to DIN ISO 3585
  • Design: Form A (socket) or Form B (sphere)
  • Standard: DIN 12242
  • Precision ground for optimal fit
  • High chemical resistance
  • Thermal shock resistant
  • Low thermal expansion
  • Autoclavable
Functionality:

The ball joint sphere (Form B) fits into the corresponding ball joint socket (Form A) of the same KS size. Due to the spherical geometry, both components can be moved within a defined angular range (up to ±30°, depending on size) while maintaining a tight seal. This is particularly advantageous when building complex apparatus where rigid connections are not possible or desired.

Distinction Between Forms:
  • Form A (Socket): Hollow ground joint, receives the sphere
  • Form B (Sphere): Solid ground joint, inserts into the socket
Application Areas:
  • Distillation and extraction apparatus
  • Flexible connections in complex setups
  • Synthesis systems with variable angles
  • Vacuum and pressure applications
  • Research and development laboratories
  • Chemical analysis
  • Reflux condensers and condensers
  • General laboratory setups
Advantages:
  • Angular compensation enables flexible arrangement
  • Vacuum-tight with correct application
  • Easy assembly and disassembly
  • Reusable and durable
  • Compatible with ball joint clamps for permanent fixation
  • Temperature resistant and chemically inert
Application Notes:

Ball joint sockets and spheres must always be used in the same KS size to ensure precise fit. For permanent and pressure-resistant connections, the use of ball joint clamps with set screws is recommended. For vacuum applications, suitable joint grease (e.g., high vacuum grease) can be used additionally to increase tightness.

The ball and socket joint connections are available in various KS sizes from KS 13/5 to KS 64/40, covering all common laboratory requirements. The stated length refers to the total length of the respective component.
